Hometown Filled Pool With Rocks—He Became Navy SEAL Elite Master Chief William Goines was denied access to his hometown pool in segregated Ohio—so when integration came, the town filled it with rocks and gravel. But Goines taught himself to swim in a creek, joined the Navy, became one of only 13 to complete underwater demolition training out of 96 men, and in 1962 was selected as the ONLY Black man to join the newly created Navy SEAL Team Two under President Kennedy. He served 3 tours in Vietnam
