May 19th - on this day in 1965, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration conducted the fourth abort test of the Apollo spacecraft, A-003. A Little Joe II rocket launched from Launch Complex 36 at the White Sands Missile Range, carrying an Apollo boilerplate Command and Service Module and an Apollo Launch Escape System (LES). Shortly after liftoff, an actual, unplanned abort situation occurred, when the Little Joe II entered into an uncontrolled roll and started to disintegrate. This
